Bombardier, EDI Rail to build commuter trains for Australia's Queensland Rail

advertisement

Bombardier Transportation and Australian train manufacturer EDI Rail recently obtained a $158 million contract from the Queensland, Australia, government to build 24 three-car electric commuter trains for Queensland Rail.

Bombardier’s $74 million portion of the contract calls for integrating the vehicles, designing the cars and bogies, and supplying the propulsion, electrical and communication systems.

EDI will supply the body shell, interiors, bogies, and ventilation and door systems.

Designed to operate at speeds up to 80 mph, the cars will be similar to 31 trains Bombardier and EDI built for Queensland Rail that recently began revenue service in Perth. The commuter railroad will use 16 of the trains to provide interurban service to the Gold Coast and other regions; the agency will use the remainder for suburban commuter services.

Bombardier and EDI will assemble cars at each of their Maryborough, Queensland, facilities. Bombardier will manufacture the propulsion and traction equipment at its Vasteras, Sweden, and Pittsburgh plants.
