NJ Transit to assemble management team for Meadowlands project

New Jersey Transit plans to soon enter into agreements with several agencies to oversee the Meadowlands Rail Spur project, which will provide rail access to a sports and entertainment complex.

NJ Transit will work with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to fund, design, construct and manage the rail spur to the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

Under the agreement, NJ Transit will create a project management team that includes NJSEA and NJDOT staff. NJSEA will be responsible for obtaining professional and construction services; NJ Transit and NJDOT will approve design and construction documents, and work with regulatory agencies to obtain permits.

After the spur is complete in 2007, NJ Transit will own, operate and maintain the rail infrastructure, and operate a new rail station at the complex. NJSEA will provide maintenance and security for the station.

In September, NJ Transit obtained a $5 million grant from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to help fund the $150 million project.
