During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) posted record Friday ridership on its Airport MAX Red Line light-rail service.

The day after Thanksgiving, 3,670 passengers used the Portland International Airport station — a 60 percent increase compared with a typical Friday average of 2,300 passengers. During the holiday weekend, combined Saturday and Sunday ridership at the airport station totaled 4,860 passengers, 89 percent more than average weekend ridership of 2,570.

In Septemer 2001, the 5.5-mile Red Line opened, providing direct service between downtown Portland and the airport terminal. In August 2003, TriMet extended the Red Line to Beaverton Transit Center, adding direct service to the airport from six more MAX stations.
