The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded a $26.5 million grant to the Metropolitan Transit Development Board for San Diego Trolley’s Mission Valley East light-rail extension. Federal funding for the project now totals $240.6 million.

To be completed in summer 2005, the 5.9-mile extension will connect San Diego Trolley’s Blue and Orange lines. The new Green Line will fill in the system gap between Qualcomm Station in San Diego and Grossmont Center Station in La Mesa.

The line will include stations at Grantville, San Diego State University, Alvarado Medical Center and 70th Street. The agency also is purchasing 11 low-floor light-rail vehicles to operate throughout the system.

By 2015, the line is expected to serve 10,800 daily passengers.
