Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently announced several initiatives designed to improve service quality.
The authority plans to clean, inspect, replace and repair all station lights every 10 months instead of annually, and install brighter light bulbs on top of pylons. WMATA also will install light-emitting diode bulbs on all platforms and begin a six-month study in July to examine the type, location, direction and brightness of station lighting to double light output in 47 underground stations.
In addition, WMATA no longer will charge a fare when passengers exit from the same rail station they entered within a four-hour window because of unscheduled major service disruptions.
Finally, the agency will place comment cards in rail stations and on buses to solicit suggestions from passengers.
