On Wednesday, the Ohio Senate unanimously endorsed a resolution asking Congress to support the Ohio Rail Development Commission’s (ORDC) request for $2.5 million dollars to conduct an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for the Ohio Hub Plan.

The plan calls for constructing a high-speed and freight-rail corridor between Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh. Passenger trains would travel up to 110 mph. The plan also includes options to build corridors between Toldeo, Ohio, and Detroit, and between Columbus and Fort Wayne, Ind.

The EIS would enable the ORDC to identify the best route and station locations, and determine the frequency of train service and infrastructure needs, including track, bridges and utilities.

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee will consider ORDC’s funding request today. If Congress approves the request, the EIS could begin early next year. ORDC will need to make a second funding request to complete the EIS.
