Engineering firm J.L. Patterson & Associates recently obtained two awards from the Orange County Engineering Council for projects under way at the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, which operates Metrolink commuter-rail service.

The firm received the 2005 Engineering Project Achievement Award — which recognizes engineering firms or public agencies working on complex or challenging projects — for the Santa Ana Metrolink station improvements. J.L. Patterson completed final design for the project, which includes building a new side platform and grade-separated pedestrian walkway between the station and platform.

The firm’s design supports the new walkway on the existing Spanish colonial structure, minimizing construction work and incorporating materials that matched the historical building’s architecture.

In addition, J.L. Patterson engineer Patrick Mahoney received the Young Engineer Award for his work on the Metrolink Fremont siding project. Mahoney prepared engineering plans and specifications to fit a siding in a tight area between freeway traffic lanes.
