Yesterday, the House passed the Transportation Equity Act, A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU). The six-year, $284 billion bill (H.R. 3) would reauthorize funding for federal transit and highway programs.

TEA-LU includes $52.3 billion through fiscal-year 2009 for the federal transit program.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee originally introduced the legislation in March 2004. Since expiring in September 2003, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century has been extended six times. The most recent extension expires May 31.

Now, the Senate is working to develop its own version of the reauthorization bill.
