Yesterday, Sens. Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.), Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Jon Corzine (D-N.J.) introduced an amendment to the Senate’s fiscal-year 2006 budget that would allocate an additional $1.04 billion for Amtrak.

President George W. Bush’s FY2006 budget proposes only $360 million to support existing commuter- and freight-rail service along the Northeast Corridor. If the amendment is approved, the Senate’s budget would provide a total of $1.4 billion for the national passenger railroad.

The Senate is expected to vote on the amendment today.
