NJ Transit to proceed with two station renovations

New Jersey Transit officials recently greenlighted rehabilitation projects at two of the agency’s busiest stations.
The board approved a $53.2 million contract to rehabilitate and expand Trenton Station, nearly tripling the building’s size from 19,000 square feet to 46,000 square feet. The two-year project includes building new restrooms, a waiting area, retail shops and restaurants; adding an entrance; and replacing the heating and air conditioning systems, and all elevators and escalators.
NJ Transit will relocate its support services to a new mezzanine level, making room to expand waiting areas and add a ticket hall on the passenger concourse. The agency also will redesign the plaza areas around the station to improve passenger connections to River LINE light-rail trains and buses.
NJ Transit also awarded a $50.8 million contract to Conti Enterprises Inc. to rehabilitate the Newark Broad Street Station. The project includes installing two high-level platforms, including a new center island platform, and canopies; rehabilitating the main waiting room; reconstructing bridges; building new stairs to the platforms and main building; installing elevators; improving lighting; and reconstructing a pedestrian tunnel that connects the main station building to the new island platform.
Construction on the Newark Station project will begin this summer and conclude in 2007.
