Canadian government to grant millions to help secure large transit systems

The Canadian government is accepting applications from transit agencies for the first round of funding under Transit-Secure, an $80 million passenger-rail and urban transit security grant program.

Under the first round, the government will provide security grants to “high-volume” commuter-rail and public transit operators in Montreal; Toronto; Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; Vancouver, British Columbia; and the National Capital Region. Transit operators in other communities will be eligible for grants in future rounds.

Proceeds can be used to develop security and response plans, and acquire security equipment, such as communication systems, surveillance networks, and lighting and access control equipment. The government will provide 75 percent of security-related project costs; agencies will provide the remainder.

First-round applications are due Aug. 15. The government will name recipients in September.
