Earlier this week, the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee approved the Public Transportation Security Assistance Act of 2006 (H.R. 5808).

The legislation would authorize the U.S. Department of Transportation to award grants to public transportation agencies for capital projects and operational expenses that improve security. Between fiscal years 2007 and 2009, the bill would provide $2.5 billion in capital grants and $900 million in operational security expense assistance. H.R. 5808 also would provide $150 million for private bus operators.

To be eligible for grants, transit agencies would have to conduct a threat and vulnerability assessment through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
