Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. has marked a few milestones. Earlier this week, the company unveiled the first diesel multiple unit (DMU) to arrive in the United States as part of a North County Transit District (NCTD) order and the 500th “Desiro” DMU Siemens has produced worldwide.

San Diego’s NCTD has ordered 12 DMUs from Siemens for the 22-mile SPRINTER line, which will run between Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido, Calif., after it opens in December 2007. SPRINTER trains will travel at speeds up to 55 mph.

Manufactured at Siemens’ Krefeld-Uerdingen plant in Germany, the Desiro is a cross between a heavy-rail and electrically propelled light-rail vehicle.
