The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) recently added two K-9 units to search light-rail vehicles and buses for explosives. The units will operate under the Portland Police Bureau’s Transit Police Division.

The units include Milwaukie Police Officer Billy Wells and Mike, a two-year old Dutch shepherd, and Portland Police Sergeant Jim Simms and Rexo, a two-year-old German shepherd. They will join Portland Police Officer John Blair and Pearl, a four-year-old, Labrador retriever, who became TriMet’s first K-9 patrol in December 2005.

Blair and Pearl received updated training along with the two new K-9 units at a 10-week Transportation Security Administration training course at Texas’ Lackland Air Force Base.
