Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
It’ll take about three years to complete, but rebuilding work is under way at New Jersey Transit’s Metropark Station on the Northeast Corridor.
To be completed in early 2010, the $47 million projects calls widening platforms to accommodate 12-car trains; constructing heated and air-conditioned platform shelters; expanding the station building to add a second vendor space and larger waiting room; extending canopies along each platform; and adding enclosed stairways, elevators, a public address system, LCD train information system, lighting and landscaping
Originally designed as a suburban stop for Amtrak Metroliner trains, the Metropark facility became the state’s first park-and-ride station when it opened in November 1971. Today, the facility is NJ Transit’s busiest outlying station, accommodating 14,200 commuters daily.
