The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) board’s planning and development committee recently approved spending $25 million to upgrade fare machines in 86 rail stations during the next four years.

The agency would more than double the number of machines that accept credit cards and retrofit about 550 machines to dispense both plastic and paper SmarTrip cards. Currently, SmarTrip cards are sold only at stations with parking lots, sales offices and online.

During the next six months, WMATA plans to test fare machines’ touch-screen displays and replace worn-out parts.

The full board is scheduled to vote on the fare machine upgrade proposal at its July 26 meeting.
