The governments of Canada and Quebec last week teamed up to provide millions of dollars to eight short lines for infrastructure improvements. The governments signed the Canada-Quebec Agreement, which will provide more than $75 million over five years to help fund the cost of restoring and upgrading short-line infrastructure.

The funds include:
• more than $15.2 million for the St. Lawrence and Atlantic and Montreal, Maine and Atlantic railroads to complete track construction and upgrade projects costing more than $22.8 million;

• more than $14 million for the Quebec-Gatineau Railway to complete a $21 million project calling for upgrades along 300 miles of track;

• more than $9.7 million for the Matapedia and Gulf Railway to complete a $14.6 million project calling for upgrades along 215 miles of track;

• more than $7 million for the Charlevoix Railway to complete a $10.6 million project calling for boosting track capacity and protecting right-of-way portions along a shoreline;

• more than $1.7 million for the Lanaudière and Ottawa Valley railways to complete projects — such as safety improvements and line restoration work — costing more than $2.6 million; and

• more than $1.5 million for the Ottawa Central Railway to complete a $2.4 million trackwork project.
