CSXT boots up 'Carbon Calculator' to show shippers rail is environmentally friendly

The freight-rail industry continues to search for ways to promote its environmental benefits vs. other transportation modes. For CSX Transportation, the hunt has resulted in an online "Carbon Calculator."

The railroad recently launched the tool on its Web site (www.csx.com) to enable shippers to calculate carbon dioxide (CO2) emission savings by using rail. Shippers can enter their cargo's weight and miles to be shipped to obtain an estimated CO2 savings and comparative data from other modes.

"This tool enables our customers and others to better understand the difference they can make — on a shipment by shipment basis — by choosing rail," said Clarence Gooden, CSXT executive vice president and chief commercial officer, in a prepared statement.

CSXT is trying to make an environmental difference through two federal programs. The Class I is a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Leaders program aimed at reducing air emissions and a charter member of the EPA's SmartWay™ Transport Partnership, which promotes voluntary reductions in emissions and fuel consumption.
