Ohio rail commission OKs statewide funding package, approves 10 freight-rail projects

Yesterday, the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) approved 10 freight-rail projects and endorsed a $1.7 billion state funding package that would include monies for transportation infrastructure.
To be placed on a statewide ballot in November, the funding package would provide $150 million for the creation of a seamless multi-modal system linking Ohio's railroads, roads, waterways and airports.
The 10 approved freight-rail projects are:
• the rehabilitation of a 26-mile section of Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co.'s Carrollton Line;
• bridge work on Akron Metro Regional Transit Authority's Canton Line;
• rehabilitation of track at Camp Chase Railroad;
• track improvements at Cleveland Commercial Railroad;
• rehabilitation work on R.J. Corman Railroad Co.'s Cleveland Line;
• grade crossing upgrades at the Indiana & Northeastern Railroad;
• improvements to Maumee & Western Railroad's Defiance Yard;
• crossing vegetation-control work at the Ohio Central Railroad System;
• replacement of the West Central Ohio Port Authority's Sugar Creek rail bridge; and
• crossing rebuilds at the Youngstown & Southeastern Railroad.
An independent Ohio Department of Transportation agency, ORDC oversees freight and passenger railroad, grade crossing safety, and rail travel and tourism issues.
