Today, the gates officially opened at Kansas City Southern's new intermodal terminal in Kansas City, Mo.

On Friday, the railroad, CenterPoint Properties, Hunt Midwest Enterprises Inc. and the Port Authority of Kansas City held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the CenterPoint-KCS Intermodal Center Phase I, which is located at the former Richards Gebaur Air Force base.

The facility — which replaces KCS' Front Street terminal in the city — features 11,340 feet of mainline track, paved parking areas, gate security, and access to U.S. Highway 71 and state highway 150.

"With multi-modal access, future warehousing and storage capabilities and numerous amenities, this facility ... will ensure that Kansas City continues the tradition of serving as a transportation and logistics hub for North America," said KCS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike Haverty in a prepared statement.

The port authority headed efforts to create a transportation and logistics hub at the former base. Last year, the authority contracted CenterPoint Properties as master developer and sold portions of the base to the firm. Currently, work is under way to demolish the base's unusable buildings and a runway.
