New Orleans port, short line and CN inaugurate new rail yard

Last week, the Port of New Orleans, Canadian National Railway Co. and New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) dedicated the Napoleon Intermodal Rail Yard, which will handle ship-to-rail transfers at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal.

CN is the first Class I to serve the new 26-acre rail yard via its switching agent NOPB. CN uses the yard — which features four 1,700-foot-long tracks with concrete pads — to move about 350 to 400 containers weekly. NOPB provides CN and five other railroads access to the port.

New Orleans Terminal, the terminal's operator that leases the yard from the port, operates half of the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal and Ports America operates the other half. The terminal can handle 366,000 containers annually.

"The new rail yard represents an efficient way to connect our water and rail transportation networks, and CN's service to the facility will benefit shippers across the continent," said Port of New Orleans President and Chief Executive Officer Gary LaGrange in a prepared statement.
