Today, real estate development firm CenterPoint Properties announced the city of Joliet, Ill., has approved plans for an integrated logistics center and intermodal facility on a 3,600-acre site south of the city.

The center will be located near a logistics park — which includes a BNSF Railway Co. intermodal facility — that CenterPoint Properties developed in 2001 in Elwood, Ill.

"Joliet has always drawn its vitality from being a crossroads that serves as a vital transportation hub for the region, the nation and now the world," said John Greuling, president and chief executive officer of the Will County Center of Economic Development, in a prepared statement. "Long-haul trucking is being phased out nationally and replaced by containers moved by trains through modern, clean and integrated industrial facilities."

The logistics/intermodal facility could completed by 2010 or 2011.
