Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Transportation Commission approved an update to the commonwealth's 12-year transportation program, which outlines $68 billion in investments and improvements to public transit systems, freight railroads, state highways, aviation systems and bridges.

Taking effect Oct. 1, the updated 12-year program calls for $7.5 billion in public transit improvements, $234 million in freight-rail improvements, $12.2 billion for highway and bridge work, and $604 million for aviation improvements in the plan's first four years.

The commission — which comprises 10 appointees, private citizens, and the majority and minority chairmen of the House and Senate transportation committees — will submit the updated program to the Federal Transit Administration and Federal Highway Administration for review and approval. The commission reviews and updates the 12-year program every two years.
