Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Co. (WSOR), three rail transit commissions and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) recently received the National Association of Development Organizations' (NADO) 2008 Excellence in Regional Transportation Award.

The award recognizes public/private partnerships (PPPs) throughout the nation that demonstrate "exceptional regional collaboration in the transportation industry" and impact local communities.

WSOR, the commissions and WisDOT teamed up as part of the Wisconsin Freight Rail Transit Commission Program, a PPP aimed at preserving and maintaining freight-rail service in the state, and funding the acquisition and rehabilitation of Wisconsin's freight-rail system. The Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission also played a role, helping to enact legislation that enabled member counties to form Rail Transit Commissions.
