The Sacramento Regional Transit District's (SacRT) board recently "conditionally approved" a fare increase and various cost-reduction measures designed to help the agency address a multi-million-dollar loss in state funds in FY2009.

The board approved raising the base fare by 25 cents to $2.25; daily pass, by $1 to $6; and monthly pass, by $15 to $100. The hikes would take effect Jan. 1, 2009, but the agency might elect to raise fares as soon as Nov. 1 if the loss of state funds exceeds projections.

Meanwhile, SacRT will await approval of the state budget before it determines if or when to implement cost-cutting measures, such as trimming jobs and implementing a hiring freeze for "non-critical" positions, according to the agency.
