• Canadian National Railway Co. will deploy Wi-Tronix L.L.C.’s remote monitoring software on a fleet of distributed braking cars (DBCs) to operate longer trains from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Edmonton, Alberta, in winter months. CN places DBCs at train ends to maintain air-brake pressure at certain operating levels. The Class I will deploy Wi-PU and Wi-Trackers™ software to maximize DBC utilization and productivity, such as by tapping the benefits of GPS asset tracking, and monitoring fuel levels, engine performance and battery voltage, Wi-Tronix said.

• Bombardier Transportation won a $101 million order from leasing company Railpool for 45 double-deck coaches, which will operate on the Danish State Railways’ lines. Designed to reach service speeds up to 99 mph, the coaches will feature air conditioning and closed toilet systems, and multi-purpose areas to store bicycles, strollers and wheelchairs. Bombardier will deliver the coaches between September and December 2009.

• Safetran Systems Corp. was recognized by the Associated Builders & Contractors Inc.’s Keystone Chapter for serving as signal system supplier for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) award-winning Wayne Junction-to-Glenside track and signals improvement project. Safetran lead the signal system design, engineering and field test portions of the project for prime contractor The Farfield Co. The project called for building a 6.7-mile double-track segment on a SEPTA mainline.

• Global Rail Systems has added Clyde Priest to its sales and customer service team. He has 29 years’ experience in sales, business development, customer service management, product and project management, and technical product support in the U.S. and Canadian rail/transit markets. Priest has held various positions at Harmon Industries Inc., Vale-Harmon Enterprises of Canada, Alstom, Balfour Beatty Rail Systems and Southwest Signal Engineering.

• International rail consulting firm Interfleet Technology has appointed Marianne Lanzky regional manager of its Danish office. She most recently was general manager-signaling for Rail Net Denmark, where she served as project manager for the re-signaling of Denmark’s entire rail network.
