• Caterpillar Inc. subsidiary Progress Rail Services has obtained certification from Union International des Chemins de Fer (UIC) for two engine designs for rail applications. The company’s 3508 and 3512 model engines received UIC623 certificates — the highest certification for rail engines and a highly accepted certification worldwide, Progress Rail said. The engines now are qualified for European Union railway usage. To be certified by the UIC, engines must successfully complete continuous-duty and abusive cyclic testing, and undergo quality-related assessments under a defined regimen.

• Georgetown Rail Equipment Co. (GREX) has landed on three of Inc. magazine’s “Inc. 5,000 Index” lists that rank the top private U.S. companies in various categories. GREX is ranked No. 26 on the “Top 100 Transportation Companies” list, No. 42 on the “Top 50 Businesses in Austin-Round Rock, Texas” list and No. 1,923 on the “Fastest Growing in the U.S.” list.

• Siemens Mobility has delivered the first batch of 37 electric regional “Desiro UK” trains to Porterbrook Leasing Co. Ltd. in Great Britain. Designed to reach a top speed of 100 mph, the trains are being manufactured by Siemens at its Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany, plant. On Dec. 12, the first 10 trains will enter service on the West Coast Main passenger-rail line between London and Birmingham. After Siemens delivers the remaining units in June 2009, a total of 316 Desiro UK trains will be operating in Great Britain.

• Engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. has appointed Howard Smith national transit planning director. He has more than 31 years’ experience in managing various multi-modal transportation studies and traffic-planning projects, including transit development studies encompassing heavy, light, commuter and high-speed rail. Smith’s transit project portfolio includes a central Florida commuter-rail study, environmental impact statements for Tampa, Fla.’s rail project and work associated with the Fresno-Palmdale, Calif., high-speed rail project.

• Savi Group has named Myles Crandall president. He will continue to serve as chief operating officer for the company, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary that provides real-time supply chain and asset-management products, including Radio Frequency Identification and Automatic Identification Technology systems. Prior to joining Savi as COO in April, Crandall was vice president of strategic planning for Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. He previously held various executive positions at Lockheed Martin and Bechtel Corp.
