NYCT receives recognition for energy-saving efforts

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) recently won the top award — and a check for $524,000 — in the New York Power Authority’s Peak Load Management Program.

The program rewards large electricity users that shed energy loads, especially during hot summer months, to help reduce the city’s power consumption. NYCT tries to switch select subway shops and bus depots to in-house electrical generation, reduce lighting and air conditioning at other large transit facilities, and temporarily shut down power rectifiers that create third-rail energy.
