Sound Transit has moved one step closer to launching construction on the University Link light-rail extension. Last week, the University of Washington Board of Regents gave final approval for an underground station at the university, as well as twin tunnels into the station.

The university station will be located near Husky Stadium, the UW Medical Center and research facilities. The 3.15-mile line also will include a station at Capitol Hill.

Scheduled to be complete in 2016, University Link is expected to add more than 70,000 riders to Sound Transit's system daily. It will serve as an extension to the Link light-rail line scheduled to open next year between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac International Airport.

Earlier this month, the Federal Transit Administration announced it intends to award an $813 million Full Funding Grant Agreement to Sound Transit for the $1.9 billion University Link project.
