Add Phoenix to the growing number of major U.S. cities served by light rail. Last weekend, Valley Metro celebrated the grand opening of its new light-rail system, which serves Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, Ariz. The agency will offer free rides on the system until Jan. 1.

The $1.4 billion, 20-mile line features 28 stations. Valley Metro has proposed building extensions to Glendale and other areas of Mesa, as well as building lines to the northwest, northeast and along the Interstate 10 corridor.
