Last year, BNSF Railway Co. loaded 274.7 million tons of coal in the Powder River Basin (PRB), setting a new annual record. The Class I beat the previous high-water mark reached in 2007 by 5.9 million tons, or 2.2 percent.

Daily train loadings in the PRB last year averaged 51.5, more than one train ahead of 2007’s 50.2 trains-per-day pace.

In December, BNSF loaded 22.9 million tons of coal in the PRB, up slightly from December 2007’s 22.8 million tons. Daily train loadings averaged 51 vs. 50.7 in December 2007.
