Updates from Siemens, Railpower and Greenbrier

• Siemens Mobility’s rail infrastructure unit won a contract to provide fixed telecom infrastructure associated with the Newport Area Signaling Renewal project, which is part of a South Wales re-signaling project in the United Kingdom. Siemens will provide communications infrastructure both trackside and in a new South Wales control center in Cardiff. In an initial phase to be completed at 2010’s end, five signaling areas will be placed under central control, together with the integration of the Severn Tunnel crossing control area.

• On Friday, Railpower Technologies Corp.’s U.S. subsidiary Railpower Hybrid Technologies Corp. obtained court protection under Chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. On March 5, a U.S. bankruptcy court will hold a hearing on the continuation of court protection.

• On Jan. 31, a fire caused extensive damage to Greenbrier Rail Services’ (GRS) wheel facility in Washington, Ill., The Greenbrier Cos. announced. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined. Greenbrier will shift work from the damaged facility to other GRS plants and anticipates no significant service disruptions for customers.
