U.S. freight railroads’ fuel costs more than quadrupled during the past 10 years and new freight cars cost an average of $81,000 in 2007. Those facts are contained in the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) recently published “Railroad Ten-Year Trends.”
The 25th annual edition of the publication offers data from 1998 through 2007, including tables and graphs that provide an economic overview of the U.S. freight-rail industry. The book also features information on Class Is’ performance, traffic, financials, employment, plant and equipment, and operations.
In addition, the publication includes selected information on regional and local U.S. railroads, as well as Mexican and Canadian railroads.
Copies of the book are available from the AAR — orders can be placed on its Web site at www.aar.org — for $110 for non-members and $50 for members.
