BNSF Railway Co. and CSX Intermodal recently expanded their joint intermodal container service to include several new southeastern locations.

The Class Is now will serve Charleston, S.C.; Savannah, Ga.; and Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Fla., in addition to current eastern hubs in Atlanta, Jacksonville, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C.

"Our combined service is competitive with highway carriers, saves shippers money and reduces fuel consumption for moving freight,” said Steve Branscum, BNSF group vice president-consumer products, in a prepared statement.

The expanded service builds upon a 2006 BNSF/CSXI agreement to provide improved intermodal service for freight moving between the West Coast, Atlanta and other Southeast destinations.

Meanwhile, BNSF continues to upgrade portions of its key southern California-to-Chicago intermodal corridor. The Class I is spending about $7 million to replace rail along a section of the Transcon corridor between Needles and Verdemont, Calif.

To be completed next month, the project calls for 35 workers to replace more than 14 track miles of rail at a rate of one mile per day. BNSF recently completed a $100 million project under which the railroad built 15 miles of third main track on California’s Cajon Pass along the Transcon.
