Norfolk Southern Corp. has named Mark Manion executive vice president and chief operating officer to succeed Stephen Tobias, who will retire March 31 as vice chairman and COO.

A 34-year railroad operations veteran, Manion joined NS in 1975 as a management trainee. He since has served in various operations positions, including trainmaster, superintendent, general manager, vice president of mechanical, senior VP of transportation operations and, most recently, executive VP of operations.

Tobias joined NS in 1969 as a junior engineer. He later served as a terminal trainmaster, superintendent, general manager, VP of transportation, VP of strategic planning, SVP of operations and EVP of operations before being named vice chairman and COO in 1998.

“Steve has earned an unparalleled legacy for employee safety and operational efficiency. Our company today is a clear reflection of his vision and constancy,” said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, NS also named Marta R. Stewart VP and treasurer, and C.H. “Jake” Allison Jr., VP and controller to succeed Stewart.

Stewart succeeds William Romig, who will retire on March 31, ending his 32-year NS career. Since joining NS in 1983, Stewart has served as assistant manager of accounting systems, manager of financial reporting, director of corporate accounting and assistant VP of corporate accounting.

Most recently AVP of corporate accounting, Allison joined NS in 1993 as manager of audits. He later served as director of internal audit, AVP of strategic sourcing and AVP of accounting operations.
