Martin Marietta Materials Inc. recently acquired three quarries and the remaining 49 percent interest in another ballast-supplying quarry from CEMEX Inc. for $65 million.

The acquired quarries are located in Fort Calhoun, Neb.; Guernsey, Wyo.; and Milford, Utah. The Guernsey and Milford operations are rail served while the Fort Calhoun quarry ships aggregate materials via trucks and barges.

Martin Marietta now becomes sole owner of a Granite Canyon, Wyo., quarry, where the company serves as operating manager. The quarry is a major ballast supplier for BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad.

“These operations are a very good fit with our western business and will enable us to pursue growth via additional rail and water transport possibilities,” said Martin Marietta Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Zelnak Jr. in a prepared statement.

Adds President and Chief Operating Officer Ward Nye: “The sites also strengthen our position as a premier stone supplier to the railroad industry.”
