The Federal Railroad Administration recently granted $1 million to Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) to support the non-profit organization’s education outreach efforts aimed at promoting grade crossing safety and preventing trespassing.

Last year, 2,395 crossing incidents occurred, causing 287 deaths, and 453 fatalities were attributed to trespassing — the leading cause of rail-related deaths in the nation.

OLI provides grants to individual state programs that support railroad safety awareness programs; offers training and education programs for presenters; and develops and provides communication programs. The organization recently announced new initiatives to aid its outreach efforts, including projects designed to target new and non-traditional audiences at the state and local levels.
