In June, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) teetered at 97.3, decreasing only 0.1 percent from May’s level, but registering the lowest June level since 1997, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index tumbled 12.5 percent compared with June 2008’s TSI.

The Freight TSI remained unchanged from May’s level at 94.0, but again set a 12-year low. The index also tumbled 14.2 percent compared with June 2008’s level, marking the largest June-over-June decline in the 20 years the BTS has calculated the Freight TSI.

Meanwhile, June’s Passenger TSI of 109.1 dropped 0.3 percent from May’s level and 7.2 percent from June 2008’s level — also the largest-ever June-over-June decrease.

In the second quarter, the TSI decreased 1.2 percent, Freight TSI fell 1.6 percent and Passenger TSI rose 0.2 percent vs. second-quarter 2008 levels.
