Amtrak, Missouri DOT cut costs, services to resolve state funding shortfall

To make up a $400,000 state funding shortfall, Amtrak and the Missouri Department of Transportation plan to implement cost-saving measures on the railroad’s St. Louis-to-Kansas City route.

Amtrak plans to eliminate service agent positions in Kirkwood and Jefferson City, Mo., for the remainder of the fiscal year. The railroad plans to keep the stations open during the day, but passengers won’t be able to purchase tickets there.

Beginning April 1, Amtrak also plans to add a $5 surcharge for each intra-state trip.
