During the week ending Aug. 22, North American railroads’ carloadings remained way off last year’s pace. But volume at least reached its highest level since early March, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

U.S. railroads reported weekly carloads of 279,478, down 16.1 percent, and intermodal volume of 193,207 units, down 16.2 percent compared with totals from the same week last year.

For the week ending Aug. 22, Canadian railroads reported 64,267 carloads, down 15.3 percent, and 41,971 containers and trailers, down 19.2 percent year over year. Mexican railroads’ carloads fell 1.4 percent to 11,461 units and intermodal volume declined 3.1 percent to 6,279 units.
