Yesterday, the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) named Union Pacific Railroad General Director of Premium Operations Ben Shelton the winner of its inaugural Chairman’s Award.

To be presented at the 2009 Intermodal Expo and TransComp in Anaheim, Calif., in November, the award recognizes the “exceptional contributions” of an individual or individuals to the association and intermodal transportation industry, according to IANA.

Shelton has been a member of IANA’s Operations Committee for a decade, and led the Terminal Process Best Practices Task Force while serving on four additional task forces. He’s also been an IANA Maintenance and Repair Committee member for years and has served as an alternate on the Intermodal Interchange Executive Committee since 1997.

Shelton also is one of three panelists representing rail equipment providers in the Dispute Resolution Process of the Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement and was the first private industry co-chairman of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Intermodal Freight Technology Working Group from 2006 to 2008.

After he joined the transportation industry in 1966 with less-than-truckload carrier Strickland Transportation, Shelton became Union Pacific Motor Freight’s general director for labor relations in 1984. He retired from UP this month.

“[Shelton] has provided great insight and steadfastness in his work on IANA’s committees, and has been one of the most dependable and enthusiastic volunteers in the association’s history,” said IANA Chairman Greg Stefflre in a prepared statement.
