Union Pacific Railroad not only remained on BusinessWeek magazine’s latest list of the nation's top 50 "Best Places to Launch a Career,” it moved up in the rankings. The Class I ranks at No. 28 vs. No. 39 last year.

To determine the top employers for entry-level workers, BusinessWeek surveyed career services directors at U.S. colleges to determine which employers topped their lists, then polled those employers on their hiring, pay, benefits and training programs, and compared their programs with others in the same industry. In addition, research firm Universum USA surveyed more than 60,000 U.S. undergraduates to identify their five most-desirable employers. The employer survey accounted for 50 percent of the final ranking.

“While hiring levels have declined in conjunction with Union Pacific’s business levels during the global recession, we continue to look for ways to bring top talent into our organization,” said UP Senior Vice President of Human Resources Barb Schaefer in a prepared statement.

Norfolk Southern Railway previously announced that it landed at No. 26 on BusinessWeek’s list.
