Last week, the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) marked its 90th anniversary.

RAC predecessors the Canadian Railway Association for National Defence and Canadian Railway War Board were formed to expedite the flow of freight cars back from the United States to help the Canadian war effort during World War I.

“The concept worked exceptionally well, and the volunteer national board continued to coordinate related industrial activities after the war,” said RAC President and Chief Executive Officer Cliff Mackay in a prepared statement.

Today, RAC represents 54 freight and passenger railroads — which move 75 percent of the nation’s surface freight and transport 72 million passengers annually — as well as 40 associate members.
