Yesterday, CN announced it reached a voluntary mitigation agreement regarding the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co. (EJ&E) integration with the village of Plainfield, Ill. The Class I now has negotiated similar pacts with 21 of the 33 Chicago-area communities located along the EJ&E’s lines in Illinois and Indiana.

The Plainfield agreement calls for CN to provide funding for mitigation measures, including maintenance of an existing quiet zone, emergency response training, safety initiatives and improved communication.

The Class I continues to work with the 12 communities that haven’t agreed to a mitigation pact to ensure safety and environmental conditions are implemented in accordance with Surface Transportation Board requirements, CN officials said in a prepared statement.

The EJ&E integration is well under way and the railroad expects to complete it within three years.
