North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR), Norfolk Southern Railway and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently completed the restoration of a nine-mile section of track between Greensboro and High Point. The project, which called for restoring a second main track that had been pulled up in the 1970s, took two-and-one-half years to complete.

The double-track line will help alleviate bottlenecks, boost freight-rail capacity and improve passenger train reliability, according to NCDOT, which provided $23 million for the project. NCRR — which owns and manages a 317-mile rail corridor between Morehead City and Charlotte — provided $4 million to restore the track.

The line will play a role in NS’ proposed Crescent Corridor domestic intermodal route.

“Double-tracking this busy section of track will enable us to move more freight faster, offer more competitive service and help relieve highway congestion on this critical corridor,” said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.
