UP's coal train loadings continued to lag in January

Union Pacific Railroad’s January coal train loadings reflect lagging coal demand as utilities continue to maintain large stockpiles. Last month, the Class I loaded 975 trains in the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) and 229 trains in the Colorado/Utah Region compared with 1,044 and 242 trains, respectively, in January 2009.
UP registered 114 missed PRB loading opportunities in January, 60 of which were attributable to utility plants, 51 to the railroad, 28 to adverse weather conditions and three to mines. Missed loading opportunities were offset with 128 extra loadings, UP officials said in a weekly coal loading performance report.
