CSX, UTU negotiate five-year agreement for southern lines

CSX Corp.’s southern lines and the United Transportation Union (UTU) recently reached a tentative five-year agreement covering conductors and yard workers at five CSX predecessor railroads: the Atlanta & West Point; Chesapeake & Ohio; Louisville & Nashville; Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis; and Seaboard Coast Line.

The pact addresses the unique working conditions and bargaining history of the southern lines, according to the UTU. The agreement calls for a performance bonus plan and stock-based individual performance award program in addition to wage rates guaranteed to match those negotiated in national contracts. Workers also would obtain expanded seniority rights and 401(k) retirement benefits.

The UTU will send ratification ballots to affected members soon. The union expects to count ballots on April 30.
