The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) has approved the city of Jackson’s plan to begin rehabilitating a rail line.

The city has obtained $1.4 million in federal stimulus funding for the project, which calls for realigning rail, replacing ties, installing new ballast and replacing rail on curves. The track improvements will enable the line’s operator, U.S. Rail Corp., to provide “more reliable, safe and timely service to current and future customers,” ORDC officials said in a prepared statement.

The city acquired the nearly 60-mile line that runs through Jackson, Ross and Vinton counties via two transactions completed in 1987 and 1990. ORDC previously helped fund various line improvements, including tunnel repairs.
