BNSF honors chemical shippers' safety efforts

BNSF Railway Co. recently named a record 93 chemical shippers as recipients of its annual Product Stewardship Awards for safely transporting hazardous materials by rail during 2009. Last year, the Class I honored 86 shippers with the award.

Launched in 1997, the award recognizes companies that “successfully implemented the ethics of product stewardship under the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® initiative,” according to BNSF. Shippers must transport a minimum of 500 loaded tank cars of hazardous materials during the previous year with zero non-accidental releases during the entire transportation cycle to be eligible for the award.

“We are pleased that each year the number of customers receiving this award grows,” said Katie Farmer, BNSF vice president of industrial products sales, in a prepared statement. “It demonstrates our customers’ and the rail industry’s focus on the safe transportation of hazardous materials.”
