Today, The Andersons Inc. announced it recently “made a significant minority investment” in Iowa Northern Railway Co. (IANR) and its subsidiaries.

IANR operates a 163-mile line between Manly and Cedar Rapids, and a branch line between Waterloo and Oelwein. The short line primarily serves agribusiness shippers and helps develop logistics terminals designed to transload various products, including ethanol and wind-turbine components.

The Andersons retains interests in the grain, ethanol and plant nutrient sectors of U.S. agriculture, provides rail-car leasing and repair services, produces turf products and is involved in general merchandise retailing.

“Investing in a short-line railroad has been a strategic priority for the Rail Group for some time,” said Andersons Rail Group President Rasesh Shah in a prepared statement. “Iowa Northern’s primary customers are in industries we know well, such as grain, fertilizer and ethanol.”
